8 Western Digital SSDs now in stock
Western Digital's current SSD line-up is now in stock at Tier One Distribution across eight SKUs, from a 250 GB NVMe entry drive to an 8 TB PCIe 5.0 flagship. The range covers every tier a system builder sells into — budget desktop refreshes, mainstream capacity upgrades and Gen 5 performance builds.
The PCIe 5.0 tier: WD_BLACK SN8100
Four of the eight SKUs are WD_BLACK SN8100 drives with heatsink, all M.2 2280, PCIe 5.0 x4 NVMe, built on TLC 3D NAND and carrying hardware encryption. Sequential read is rated at 14,900 MB/s across the 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB models, with write speeds of 11,000 MB/s on the 1 TB and 14,000 MB/s on the 2 TB and 4 TB. Random performance reaches 2,300,000 IOPS read and 2,400,000 IOPS write on the 2 TB and 4 TB drives, and 1,600,000 / 2,400,000 IOPS on the 1 TB.
The 8 TB SN8100 is the capacity halo of the range, also M.2 2280 PCIe 5.0 with TLC 3D NAND and hardware encryption, rated at 2,200,000 IOPS random read and 2,400,000 IOPS random write, with sequential figures of 14,900 MB/s read and 13,200 MB/s write measured in AS SSD. For workstation and content-creation builds where an 8 TB single-drive project volume removes a RAID configuration from the bill of materials, that is an easy upsell.
Gen 4 and SATA: the volume tiers
The WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB with heatsink remains the Gen 4 choice: M.2, PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe, 7,300 MB/s read and 6,600 MB/s write, 1,200,000 IOPS random read and 1,100,000 IOPS random write. Gaming systems on older boards do not get anything back from a Gen 5 drive, so this is where the margin sits on mainstream builds.
The WD Blue SA510 2TB is an M.2 drive on Serial ATA III at 6 Gbit/s, rated 560 MB/s read and 510 MB/s write, 90,000 / 82,000 IOPS, with an MTBF figure of 1,750,000 hours. It covers the large number of laptops and small-form-factor systems that have an M.2 slot wired for SATA only — a drop-in upgrade with no platform headache.
WD Green covers the entry positions. The SN350 250GB is M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe 1.3 with TLC flash, 2,400 MB/s read and 3,500 MB/s write at 300,000 IOPS both ways. The SN3000 500GB is a 2.5-inch Serial ATA III drive with 3D NAND, 545 MB/s read, 7 mm height and a 0–70 °C operating range, which keeps it compatible with the installed base of notebooks and thin-client chassis that still take a 2.5-inch bay.
Which one for which customer
- Workstation and content creation: SN8100 4 TB or 8 TB — single-volume capacity at Gen 5 speed, with hardware encryption for business end users.
- Gen 5 gaming and enthusiast builds: SN8100 1 TB or 2 TB on a current chipset, where the board can actually feed the drive.
- Mainstream gaming on PCIe 4.0: SN850X 2 TB, the obvious boot and library drive for Gen 4 platforms.
- Laptop and SFF upgrades: Blue SA510 2 TB where the M.2 slot is SATA-wired, Green SN3000 500 GB where the system takes a 2.5-inch drive.
- Entry and refurbishment volume: Green SN350 250 GB for low-cost NVMe builds and fleet refreshes.
